Jobs for Senior Citizens
Many senior citizens are struggling in the current economy. As many
people around or past retirement age have been laid off or encouraged
to go on retirement early, jobs for senior citizens seem to be rare. However, there are jobs for seniors out there who take the time to properly investigate.
Baby boomers in the workplace
are retiring at a later age than previous generations. Because of their
desire to work longer, jobs have been created for those with a more
mature outlook and a larger knowledge base than most young workers. One
company that has many jobs for senior citizens is Home Depot.
Home Depot routinely hires workers over the age of 50, especially if
they have experience as electricians or plumbers. Jobs with retail
stores like Home Depot are beneficial to seniors because they usually
have part-time positions available, flexible hours, and hire other
workers of similar age. Jobs are a great way for seniors to socialize,
so a work environment with other people of the same generation is ideal.
AARP.org
is an ideal source of knowledge to discover which companies are hiring
seniors. Each year, this site records a list of the "Best Employers for
Workers Over 50." Many of the employers on this list consist of
schools, health care companies, hospitals, and banks. The top employer
of workers over 50 in 2008 was Cornell University
according to AARP.org. Almost half of their workers fit into this age
category. Also, the university hosts a number of classes and programs
that appeal to senior faculty members, and faculty members can take
these courses for free. Other top businesses on the list include First
Horizon National Corporation and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.
Regardless of the current economic downturn, there are many jobs for senior citizens available.
