Activities for Senior CitizensAfter retirement, many senior citizens find that they have a lot of free time on their hands. Instead of being bored, seniors should start some new hobbies and look for things to do with others in their age group. Activities for senior citizens include card and board games, reading, and dining. While growing up with games like Monopoly and Scrabble, many of today's seniors fondly remember spending afternoons playing these classic board games. In addition to being an entertaining pastime, board games help seniors maintain cognitive abilities like memory and counting. These activities also allow multiple senior citizens to group together and socialized with each other. This type of personal contact is important to prevent a senior from being depressed or feeling too isolated. Additional games for senior citizens can include checkers or chess, card games, and the staple entertainment of many senior citizens, bingo. All of these activities for seniors are great because they involve minimal movement, allowing even the most physically disabled of seniors to participate. Reading is another top activity for senior citizens. A good book can be hard to put down, and the mental activity involved with reading is ideal for keeping a senior's mental acuity sharp. Of course, a large proportion of senior citizens have problems with their vision, but many alternatives are available for seniors who still desire to read. Large print and Braille versions of many popular books and newspapers are available, as well as audio books. Overall, reading is a perfect pastime for senior citizens because it requires little physical movement and the number of alternatives available for seniors with vision impairment. Finally, one of the most enjoyable activities for senior citizens is simply eating a nice meal. Try eating out at a nice restaurant with companions or loved ones once a week or less often according to budgetary concerns. Splurge and order a glass of wine and truly enjoy an evening or lunch meal at a restaurant. Try out a restaurant with a live band that fits your musical taste to have a more fulfilling outing. There are many other forms of entertainment available for senior citizens. For instance, some senior citizen exercises can be both fun and healthy for the elderly. Other seniors might be interested in traveling. |
