It is one of the most feared diseases known to mankind. Cancer. It is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. Unfortunately, too many of us believe that there are so many things beyond our control that we don't focus on how to take positive action to help prevent it. For example, we fret about substances found in food. We worry about what's in the water. The air. The list goes on. Yet, scientists have proven that there is much we can do because the reality is that the majority of cancers don't need to happen at all. They are the result of lifestyle choices, especially what type of food we consume.
The foods that help us prevent this dreaded diagnosis are characterized by high amounts of phytochemicals, fiber, and antioxidants. Here are some primary things to look for when buying ingredients for the food we cook.
The power of berries can't be overlooked. Whether baked into muffins, blended into drinks, or eaten raw, they are miracle foods. They contain an abundance of phytochemicals that can help you battle the big C. They tend to trigger antioxidants that help neutralize the damage free radicals do to your cells. Make it a habit to buy and eat lots of berries, blue berries in particular.
Red wine--in moderation--also can help. It contains polyphenols called catechins and resvertatrol which provide cancer protection and inhibit cancer's uncontrollable cell growth.
Plus, lycopene is widely believed to help prevent cancer, especially prostrate cancer. It is found in abundance in tomatoes so eat them fresh, eat them stewed, and use lots of red pasta sauce. It just might help save your life.
Beans also are a powerhouse of nutritional benefits. For example, they contain lots of fiber, which can help prevent some cancers, particularly colon cancer.
And, the little miracle bulb, garlic, has been used as much for its medicinal value as its flavor for literally thousands of years. It too is widely believed to help prevent cancer.
So, start your own personal anti-cancer campaign by trying to incorporate these items into your diet. Doing so will most likely help protect you from cancer.
